Tournament of Novels:

Joe Carter at First Things has posted a March Madness-style novel bracket in order to determine the coveted title of Greatest Novel of All Time. I’m pulling for The Brothers Karamazov. Hopefully it doesn’t end up being Charlotte’s Web. Or, even worse, The Catcher in the Rye.

  1. My Opening Bracket is as follows (Keep in mind that I haven’t read ALL of these novels, so the ones I haven’t read I picked on the basis of 1- Hating the other novel, 2- Liking the name, 3- Liking the Author, or 4- Hating the other author. And, yeah, sometimes it was really hard to choose.)

    1- The Brothers Karamazov
    2- Ulysees
    3- Moby Dick
    4- Pale Fire
    5- Pride and Prejudice
    6- Starship Troopers
    7- To the Lighthouse
    8- Lord of the Rings
    9- Brave New World
    10- Gulliver’s Travels
11- The Catcher in the Rye
    12- To Kill a Mockingbird
    13- Wise Blood
14- The Way We Live Now
    15- Madame Bovary
    16- Jane Eyre
17- A Bend in the River
    18- Huck Finn
    19- Red October
    20- Herzog
    21- Brideshead Revisited
    22- Invisible Man
23- One Hundred Years of Solitude
24- The Book of Laughter and Forgetting
    25- The Plauge
26- The Sound and the Fury
    27- Call of the Wild
    28- The Scarlet Letter
    29- Pilgrim’s Progress
30- Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
    31- The Moviegoer
    32- Charlotte’s Web

The Real Question is “Would Adam Cooper take Huck Finn over Don Quixote?” Hard to know, hard to know.

What about “The Sound and the Fury”?

Maybe I am biased because I happen to be in love with Faulkner. :-)

  3. I picked the Sound and the Fury! That’s probably my favorite Faulkner novel. And, actually, it appears to have won it’s bracket.

  4. Also I recommend that you get on and vote Miss Vinegar. Maybe you can bring Faulkner the victory!

Really, really unfortunate that Alice was beat by Swift … how could that’ve happened? On the other hand it’s not to late to save Madame Bovary from defeat at the hands of Dickens. This is an awesome game!

Also, Pilgrim’s Progress vs. Hitchhiker’s Guide is a pretty epic match up.

  7. Oh man, I’m so bummed that my couple of days of work forced me to miss Round 3! Maybe I could’ve saved Pride and Prejudice! Well, I don’t know, probably not. Still, we’re gearing up for the Final Four. Rainscape, what was your vote on Huck vs. Don Quixote?

Round 4- Who will make the Final Four?!?!?: http://www.firstthings.com/blogs/firstthoughts/2010/03/30/the-tournament-of-novels-%e2%80%93-round-4/#more-14249

    My (rather obvious) bracket:
    1- Brothers K (over LoTR)
2- To Kill a Mockingbird (over David Copperfield)
    3- Huck Finn (over Brideshead)
4- Scarlet Letter (over Pilgrim’s Progress)

  9. So, um, depressingly enough The Brothers Karamazov was beaten by….THE LORD OF THE RINGS! What the carp? I was so upset that I wrote a comment expressing my disapproval. I also mentioned you, Miss Vinegar, and your feelings of disbelief at Faulkner’s departure.
    The Final Four are:

    1) Lord of the Rings vs. To Kill a Mockingbird (I went with the obvious choice here. Stupid LoTR)
    2) Huck Finn vs. The Scarlet Letter (this was a hard one. I went with Scarlet Letter, but then I thought that I might actually think Huck Finn is better. Either way, I don’t really mind which one wins.)

So get out and vote! This is at least as important as the Presidential election!
